Ensaio Sobre a Árvore
A palavra Ensaio vem do francês ‘essai’ e significa tentativa, experimento.
Essay on the Tree
Essay on the Tree is a poetic essay which, as its name suggests, offers a personal, partial and provisional perspective on those magnificent beings that allow us to exist: trees. It is a solo work in progress, in which the artist seeks to reflect upon and dance with them, in dialogue with time and the world. A body with its own age and time. To ‘rehearse’ here is to move as one treads on damp ground, as one who shares the same earth, allowing oneself to be permeated by the life that pulses within them.
The word ‘essay’ comes from the French ‘essai’ and means an attempt or an experiment. In the field of literature, an essay is a reflective and argumentative text in which the author expresses their ideas on a subject. It lacks the rigour of a thesis, can blend genres and allows thoughts to drift freely on a subject, as in a poetic experiment. In the performing arts, the ‘ensaio’ can be the rehearsal itself, the very process of creation, which gradually takes shape and gains substance, being tested as it takes form, in the persistence of something that transforms as it is repeated, reaffirmed and discovered.
“Essay on the Tree” has been taking shape over recent years, before, during and after the project “Vegetal Loves and Death” – staged by Cozinha Performática and produced by Corpo Rastreado in 2025 with the support of the 37th edition of the São Paulo Municipal Dance Promotion Programme. As with all of Cozinha Performática’s works, it is based on artistic encounter and collaboration, and its results benefit from the entire human – and more than human – tapestry that takes shape.
Open rehearsals have been held, and the premiere of the solo piece is scheduled for late 2026 – whilst the process continues to mature.
